Think about it Thursday - New Years Resolution
As another twelve month period closes, and we approach the commencement of the new year, I challenge you to consider a resolution that will support your walk with Christ.
Maybe you've been on your Christian journey for most of you life, or maybe the Lord just recently saved you. Perhaps you're devouring everything you can about Christianity, or possibly you stumbled upon this post after a long rabbit trail of scouring the World Wide Web for something completely different. Either way, whatever your journey, or however long you've been walking with the Lord, you were lead here.
Every year, people start the month of January with hopeful intentions. They have high aspirations to lose weight, or pay off their debt, to become more organized, or to be a better ______ (fill in the blank wife, mother, daughter, friend, etc.) But for most people, the ambition they had in January has run out of steam and in a few short months, feelings of defeat and lack of success in their goals are all they have to show those New Year resolutions.
We can find in the Bible many verses that insist we know the word of God inside out. "...this book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it." (Joshua 1:8) In Psalm 1 we read, "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night." And not that you need another bible verse to get the point, but let's look back at the New Testament in Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and gyms and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."
Therefore, if we recognize the importance of these commands in the Bible, why not take the opportunity to make a meaningful New Years resolution this year to be in God's word.
Here are a few Bible reading plans that I have either used, or have come highly recommended.
Reading the entire bible in a year with The One Year Bible Reading Plan is a plan my husband and I have followed for the past two years. It consists of passages from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. This arrangement of Scripture brings variety and a fresh approach to each day’s reading, while providing a clear understanding of the Bible’s larger message.
Ligonier Ministries offers a variety of bible reading plans. Reading through the Bible with 7 day a week plan, each day of the week dedicated to a different genre: epistles, the law, history, Psalms, poetry, prophecy, and Gospels.
Navigators Discipleship offers reading through the New Testament in a year, reading Monday to Friday. Weekends are set aside for reflection and other reading. Especially beneficial if you’re new to a daily discipline of Bible reading.
Ligonier Ministries also offers a Tabletalk Bible reading plan, with two readings each day, one from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament.
Share with me your success at mwhitt613@gmail.com as you are growing in your love for our Lord while you engage in reading your bible, I would love to hear from you!
